I may well be the only copywriter or marketer on the planet who hasn’t emailed their audience with some kind of reference to the slapping incident on last Sunday night’s Oscars show.
And at this point, not only am I personally sick of hearing about it (as I’m sure you are), the whole stupid thing has gotten waaaaaaaaay more attention than it deserves. Honestly, can we just make it go away?
To me, the peak moment of the show (I only caught the second half of it) was when Lady Gaga came on stage with 76-year-old LEGEND Liza Minnelli to present the “Best Picture” award.
Lady Gaga’s show of graciousness and compassion as she shined the limelight on Liza, who is wheelchair-bound and suffers from various health issues…
…who helped Liza without shaming her…
…who lifted her up and let her know she had her back when she said, “I got it” …
Okay, I’ve gotta pause here a moment to stifle a sob…
In any case, THAT was the moment we all need to take in and think about and model whenever possible.
And I feel like we all need to do more of it for each other.
Not only that, when we are struggling, feeling overwhelmed, and it all seems like too much…
We need to lean on someone else or otherwise ask for help.
I just got back from The Copywriter Club In Real Life (TCC IRL) event in Nashville, where I did a Q&A with their mastermind group and sat on a few panels.
One of those panels was a discussion about burnout… and ways to deal with it.
I’ll be talking about this more in the coming days, but if you’re dealing with TOO much stress… or medical conditions like anxiety or depression… or sleepless nights… or are sick of having no “down time”…
There is hope. And know that we all go through it… and there’s ways to deal with it.
I’ve gone through it. I’ve had a ton of stress and extra responsibility put on me the past 7 months since my elderly mother fell and broke her hip on September 2nd.
What’s gotten me through it? Trying to fit in the “self care” I need, like not putting so much pressure on myself with my business… sleeping in when I feel I need to (like this morning, though that may have been due to the late night in Nashville the night before last listening to live music and dancing)…
I’ve also skimped on things like getting to the gym, which actually has made the stress and the occasional sleepless nights worse, so I’m going to do more of the gym and cardio “self care” I need (or more nights out dancing! lol)
It’s also important to keep in mind that a lot of stressful events and times are really temporary… and you get through them. Young kids grow up and become more independent. Health crises (like when my husband had cancer 10 years ago) usually come to a close. Life gets more manageable again.
But if you are trying to look “strong” on the outside and feel like you’re falling apart on the inside, it’s important to let someone know. Let them know you need them to have your back.
And if you’re around someone who needs that extra lift or boost or shoulder, let them know you’ve “got” it…
Yours for smarter marketing,
Kim
