The copywriter of the future

Dec 15, 2022

Everyone’s talking about the latest AI tools (like ChatGPT and the next generation GPT-4 that should be out in 2023).

Some are going “googly-eyed” over AI’s capabilities and how it will replace what copywriters do… others are “pooh-pooh”-ing it and claiming it’s not worth all the hype.

The truth, as you may rightly suspect, is somewhere in-between.

And no matter how you’re feeling right now about AI: excited, worried, confused, frustrated, cynical, sick to your stomach, or all of the above…

You’re going to get some much-needed clarity–and a ton of ideas and insights–from listening to the conversation I had with Sam Woods the other day.

Listen to it right now here…

Sam and I talked about the impact of the latest AI tools on copywriting and creative work. He’s the smartest person I know when it comes to getting the most out of these tools to produce successful sales copy.

He’s been extensively using and experimenting with AI to create copy for his clients since 2019 (which doesn’t sound like a long time, but it’s an eternity when you consider how fast AI tools have progressed in just a few short years.)

Sam has used AI to write winning short and long-form ads, do copywriting research, and much more… and shares the results of what he’s discovered by exhaustively testing out these tools in this open and frank discussion.

And that’s exactly what AI is: a TOOL. It’s not going to completely replace copywriters, at least anytime soon. But it will make what we do different.

Basically, the copywriter of the future will be like an orchestra conductor… a movie producer/director… a “Wizard of Oz”-like copywriting and marketing maestro.

Sam and I talk about exactly what that means for our profession (and for clients who hire us). Here’s just a glimpse of what you’ll discover…

  • What’s working now with 100% AI-generated copy–and what’s not.
  • How to use AI to write long-form copy like sales pages (and why human intervention will still be needed).
  • Could there be a “Kim-bot”? And would it beat me in a head-to-head copy test? The surprising answer, at least to the first question.
  • What you must know about using AI to conduct copywriting research. Plus examples of effective prompts you can use to “dig up the gold”.
  • Why the much-vaunted, “soon”-to-be-released GPT-4 may already be here. Here’s how to get a jumpstart in getting good at using it.
  • AI can’t write good stories, right? Wrong! Here’s how to use it to get a halfway-decent story lead for your next email or promo. Plus how Sam’s actually used AI to publish books he sells on Amazon.
  • What’s happening now to make AI copy tools even smarter (and why you’re helping AI take over the world.)
  • Don’t like the copy output AI gives you? Here’s how to make it give you something better. (And when it’s easier to just write something yourself!)
  • Biggest limitation right now that keeps AI from helping you write great copy or do better research — and how to overcome it.
  • Why more companies using AI tools will mean MORE work and opportunities for copywriters — and what that work looks like.
  • The most crucial skills the “copywriter of the future” MUST have to survive and thrive (hint: my math and stats degree may finally be coming in handy!)
  • And much more!

If you want to know what all the AI “hoopla” is about… whether you should be panicking about your future… and the 3 things you must do NOW if you’re a copywriter, marketer, or run your own business, then you won’t want to miss this revealing and fun conversation

Listen to it here (and be sure to share it with others!)

I’d love to hear YOUR thoughts on this… so share them in the YouTube comments, on my social media posts, or simply reply back to this email.

Yours for smarter marketing,

Kim

P.S. To get to this copywriting and marketing maestro level, you still have to continuously study and get better at your craft, and achieve a level of mastery with it.

Whether it’s knowing which questions to ask when doing research… deciding which headline or ad to test… being able to recognize a compelling angle or “big idea”… and the hundreds of other micro-decisions and judgement calls one needs to make when putting together a new promo or email campaign…

You still need the foundation you get from real-life experience and that courses like Research BeastMillion-Dollar Controls, and my Get Dangerously Good Copywriting System give you. So keep learning as much as you can about HOW to write copy… as well as getting up to speed on using the latest AI tools, too.

As the legendary Gene Schwartz famously described his process, it was all about “assembling” copy. The latest AI tools give us a brand new way of doing just that… and taking it to an exponentially higher level.

So don’t be afraid of AI, don’t deny its existence…

Take a listen here and figure out what you need to be doing right now to get ready for it.
